A mini-comic version of this anthology was published in 2012. In the back, I posted a call for submissions for a second volume. I have received some phenomenal pieces in response to this request. So I'm hoping to make a book-style version of this anthology. The book is open for submissions from anyone who was bullied whether it was because of their sexual orientation, race, religion, appearance, socio-economic status, or perhaps the reason wasn’t clear. I’m looking for submissions on topics such as:

your experiences coping with bullies and how they may have impacted your academic performance or other ways bullies negatively impacted your life (Let's let school administrators know this is a problem they should be addressing in their schools)

how you responded to the bully, especially if there was a confrontation

how your life has improved since that time with the aim of letting others know that it does indeed get better

I hadn't really considered before the number of challenges I have to face as a cartoonist in terms of reaching my audience. Customers (specifically people who buy comics) have many buying preferences that traditional print book customers don’t necessarily have:

-Art style
-Genre (i.e. superhero / mainstream vs. indie)
-Subject matter preferences which to me is somewhat different from genre - more specific, maybe? (i.e. travel log, memoir, horror stories, romance, comedies, tear-jerker, thrillers, animal stories, etc)
-Font style (i.e. typed verses hand-lettered, readability, etc)
-paper (i.e. slick commercial print vs. 8 1/2 x 11" folded and stapled zine)

This conversation happened after I'd already been perusing comics at Comix Experience and had picked out a few comics and a graphic novel to buy for myself. And it's true. I definitely have my own preferences with all of the above. The challenge is in the fact that I may like a particular story, but decide not to buy the comic because I don't like the art style or the font. Or, on the contrary, I may like an artists illustrations but decide not to buy a comic because I don't like the subject matter.

Somehow thinking about this has both been discouraging in realizing what a small audience I am writing and drawing for (those who like my art and my story and my font, etc etc). But there was also some relief in thinking about this. Because it's not personal whose comics I buy. I buy the ones whose art/plot/font match my personal preferences. So... not everyone loves my comics and well, that's okay. *sigh* What a relief! I don't have to try to please everyone!Melaina Comicshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16046125590630728846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1205359229287664519.post-489128946734676392011-04-20T16:14:00.000-07:002011-05-22T16:31:49.051-07:00My Talk at City College of San FranciscoLast night, I had a wonderful time at City College of San Francisco, giving a lecture on "The Art & Craft of Making Comics." The audience consisted of students who are studying design, type and illustration. I *love* public speaking and did my best to make the talk as interactive as possible. Along with the obvious explanation of how I make comics (literally), I shared what motivates me to make comics and solicited from the audience information about what motivates them to create. We talked about the question of style verses skill. This has been an interesting topic for me when working with cartoonist groups (who like writing groups give one another feedback), particularly the Sunday Night Comics Group whom I met with for a couple of years. That group was amazing and I grew so much as an artist from my time with them! But back to the lecture... I talked about distribution and the pros and cons of paper verses digital mediums, including the differences in formatting for a paper comic or zine verses formatting for a digital medium and how I had to go about reformatting and often re-drawing images when I have translated my physical comics that had already been printed to be used in a digital format (for my iPhone app). And then... dun dun dun dun... I went over the COST of making and distributing comics (an unpopular topic for any artist). And reviewed how to determine the monetary value of a comic when deciding on sale price. That was an interesting piece for me to prepare for. Kind of discouraging to realize my prices would not even pay me minimum wage for the time I put into my art. But then I talked about success and asked them to tell me "What is success?" And that helped a lot. Because for me, personally, success is if one person reads one of my comics and hears something in them that resonates with them and they feel less alone in the world for even those 5 minutes it takes them to finish the comic. That alone is success.

Giving this lecture was a wonderful experience for me, talking with these students. I hope I get to give talks like that again. I've already been thinking of other topics to cover for next time!Melaina Comicshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16046125590630728846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1205359229287664519.post-28848666070408972742010-11-14T09:09:00.000-08:002011-05-22T16:11:51.643-07:00Request for Submissions: Cartoonists Against Bullying comic anthology<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 318px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghitC6j7RJgAd1h2nU9QhpS0MEjNISDcqAmyVjZa8Gfb_I2Bbg398Xp2VjL7oA-lD1vnMQKKNA4nlayIfJm3mhv7VhIvlrEVM7tzq_XEqnFotwMQVeKF2b5bBBH0E7Cfs1p1A6D94yYhln/s320/button-geek-colored.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5539456148559439234" />
Call for Anthology Submissions:

As you’ve heard in the media, we have experienced a tragic number of suicides of teens you were being bullied, particularly young men who were bullied for being gay. I thought it might be interesting for others to read as well, so I thought I'd post it on my blog.

1. An idea is born <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhib2JxWDjTWxBYT5tbq3jIXxNGvhD36BDayFAGIlYSVFGCiKgiqoANUHOMWChoOyQ2Y-nGfIeXHx2J13WZ0vMfpKqqIzvk6JMDEI9i_S73g5mhKiOo7hpVZ00-_UR_fy_hJECXOGM3LBv0/s320/sleep.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522040253268716338" />

I create one comic every year. As I write autobiographical comics, the comic is usually based on a theme of that year and is usually an issue I'm struggling with in my life at that time. For example, "Death, Dating and Other Disasters" was written the first year after my divorce when I was experiencing a lot of grief and also learning how to date again. The idea for each comic often occurs to me when I'm waking up in the morning – thus my first comic was entitled “Hypnopompia,” which means “the partially conscious state that precedes complete awakening from sleep.” As the comic goes on, more and more is revealed to me, often at that same time of day.

2. Create an outline: first draft

Example from "Crash Course" cartoon outline

Page 5
1. I hate driving.
2. I seriously do.
3. I hate traffic.
4. If I was the only car on the road, it might not be so bad, actually.
5. But unless I only drive between the hours of 2am and 4am every day, that’s not too likely.
6. And even then, I’d probably have to be at least 20 miles from any signs of civilization.
7. Okay, so what’s so bad about driving?

Page 6
1. [me unlocking car door]
2. [me behind the wheel, adjusting mirror]
3. [rear-view mirror showing gap in traffic]
4. [me looking back at gap in traffic]
5. [view of my car pulling out of parking spot]
6. [aerial view of both cars with other driver’s thought bubble “Oooh… Don’t you think I’m gonna let you in here” and “Zoom!” coming out of muffler.]
7. [ME blissfully moving ahead, oblivious]
8. CRASH

Page 7
1. I’ve never owned a car before.
2. Well, I did drive around in my ex’s pick-up truck on a regular basis
3. and owned a motorcycle for a brief time.
4. But I hadn’t driven on a regular basis since I moved to San Francisco in 1998 [show MUNI bus]
5. I don’t remember other drivers being so aggressive.
6. Admittedly, my ex used to tease me that NYC cab drivers would lose in a game of chicken with me.
7. But times, they have changed.

This actually didn't all end up in the final version of the comic, but this is an excerpt from the first draft.

3. Conduct research to flesh out story (optional)

I've actually only done this for two of my comics - Bewildered Bisexual and Crash Course. But I like including some educational elements in some of my comics. As an example, for Crash Course, some of the data I collected included information about car accidents.

A recent study conducted in Europe discovered that
o 80% of drivers involved in traffic accidents believe someone else is at fault, and
o 5% take responsibility for their actions,
o while the other 15% represent varied combined responses.

4. With all the technology that is out there, more and more folks are going digital, even in these beginning stages. But I'm hoping I'll always hang onto pencil and paper. As you'll see in the later stages of my creation of comics, I definitely take advantage of other means of using technology to make comics.

This sketching usually occurs in multiple stages. I'll often start with a simple stick figure to represent the image I want. Or sometimes I'll even just write the word, such as "car door" and then circle it to indicate to myself what I want to draw in that space. I will then get more and more specific and detailed until I have a final sketch in place.

I used to draw in a moleskin sketchbook, but as you can imagine, I am having to erase my pencil lines over and over. This often led to pages getting ripped or just simply worn down, so more recently I've switched to drawing on bristol board.

5. I get very clear images of what I want in my head, but I have trouble bridging between that image directly onto paper. I usually start by searching on-line for the perspective I want (usually a google image search), but oftentimes I can't find that exact view. So I often ask friends to model what I want.

Again, this is done in pencil. So stick figures are erased and become more developed figures and images.

6. Inking <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 98px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTCtVxZHnGujzff22YFenO670lgOApVBuncynvrWrUfmGdf7ZHwoIfMh3zZoWHBGxSPXbHy2foSM_JaUcY7CW3yfP_ObVPcqIH80HZcL3MX3xGhSL-KSO8-g21uugHlhR5Tcj52YN0yhtY/s320/making+comics-inking.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522046525489163618" />

Once the final sketch is completed, I begin to ink over the pencil lines. I like inking and find it very meditative, so I'm actually a little impatient and begin inking as soon as a sketch is complete. Some people finish sketching out their entire comic before placing ink on the page. This is smart, because if there are any changes to the plot, I'm not able to move an image once it's inked. But I get so much satisfaction out of seeing the final image appear as I erase the penciled sketch and that enthusiasm fuels me to keep going in creating my comic. I'll admit this has caused me extra work at times when I've needed to re-draw an entire page because I needed to add a frame. Once or twice I've used Photoshop to move frames around because I'd inked them and then decided I wanted to do things differently.

7. Scan <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 221px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYL2wQqbNkMmrpC5z4laY8KZHzLT-A18kbLcNNTsO9FSTkKPsP84Lu_IeJtKulx3OmCtbN7TkZycRMaE2M6Oeth_liF53VB-Fme8p2kaGOSp-a1ZAdRC7zfmPoTfz58pIXqJw2jfokllse/s320/scanner.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522048363626295586" />

Next, I scan the image into my computer. This can be challenging at times if I don't consider the size of my scanner before I start drawing.

I have a flat bed scanner that can accommodate a 8.75" x 12" image. However, I like to draw on a larger sized Bristol Board pad. I try to remember to keep my page size within the confines of the scanner size; however at times I forget and have drawn larger pages. In these cases, I make multiple scans and then cut and paste them together on Photoshop. However, that is not my preferred method. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson and not repeated that mistake more than once, but... When I get into that creative zone while drawing, things like measurements are not usually in the forefront of my mind.

Over the years I've gone through two scanners. Both times I've purchased flat bed scanners. Perhaps I will try to find one with a larger screen the next time.

8. Clean off dust particles in Adobe Photoshop <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 236px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiPa3OATrMpBpYZK09FxMjP3wYxO92Re49BntqcS4XoqB4QGseUy_I7nZfbh-k-4WE3B8VG3z5HM3d78T1uVOs0s0PGB6hRDQyxuUgYBBkzFtSDyvl5kUaO8bHmKC7CaSnL9txYGUlRf77/s320/making+comics-dusting.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522049923182066242" />

Inevitably in the scanning process, dust from the face of the scanner, pencil that didn't get fully erased or remnants of eraser particles will get picked up in the scanned image. So I always go through the image inch by inch in Photoshop to remove any of these blemishes. I will also occasionally do some minor editing in this process. I hand write all text in my comics. I have a strong preference for handwritten comics. So sometimes, I'll have to fix the dot on an "i" or close the inside of the "e" and such.

9. Due to the complexity of both the research it required and the emotional toll of some of the content, it took me a full year to complete this comic. At the end of the year, however, the final comic came to only 12 pages. I didn't feel the 12 pages adequately reflected the effort I put into that comic. So to make it more special, I decided to print it in color. I explored coloring it myself. I considered water color, but wasn't confident enough in my watercoloring skills. I considered crayon, but was concerned that medium would somehow "junk up" my art. So I finally settled on having it digitally colored. I talked to multiple friends in the cartoonist community in San Francisco about how to go about coloring the comic. In this process, a friend introduced me to Nicholas Iannone. He had just left a job where he had been coloring the Sunday syndicated comics that you read in your local newspapers. So I decided to pay him to color the comic for me. This turned out to be a very expensive endeavor between the cost of the colorist and the cost of the colored printing and amped the cost of that comic up very high. So I ended up printing a limited edition to justify the price. As you may be able to guess, I have not done a full color comic since then. However, I have continued to use a colorist to color my covers. As you can see in the example (taken from Bewildered Bisexual), the color really brings life to the art. I've begun to explore digitally distributed comics (on the internet and the iPhone), which may make color comics more affordable (without the printing costs). So you may see another full-color comic from me in the future.

10. Back then, I wasn't as computer savvy and there may have been less software options for self-publishing. But in any case, I created my first zine using Microsoft Word. It's a long and arduous process. First I format the pages horizontally with two columns. Then I print them out. Then I cut the pages in half so that I can lay the pages back to back in the order they would be read in. Then I make sure I have the right number of pages, so the center won't be two blank pages. Then I tape all of the pages together. Then I go through and cut and paste the columns into the print-order in Microsoft Word. Not ideal, huh? But because I started out doing it this way, I have not been able to get myself to try anything new. Maybe someday I can get myself to try a more efficient software that is made for this purpose.

11. I have at times emailed a digital copy to the copy shop I use, but I have created my own "Melaina Comics" font that I use to type up things like the "About the Author" page and my copy shop gets upset when the font doesn't come through correctly. They don't want to keep a copy of my font on their computer just for me. So... again, all old-school like, I walk a copy over to the copy shop.

For "Bewildered Bisexual," I did use an on-line print shop for the colored images. I used ComiXpress and was incredibly happy with them. The comics came out great; color was in integrity with the images I'd provided them and they had awesome customer service. So I would definitely use them again.

12. Fold & Staple <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 216px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHZCYE4E3yWB0JiPandLXd2Yh9qik4g-zr8Tst1cJoXjHZn-EjPvO-C6fkQs6KRnR8I2yxW40-pE4V8hRhCe92oFFCZP5NZxSE9_wG3Q4NJ4f6fVYhA9ST3R2QUOI_vfbAh-f5A_XqCfcY/s320/stapler807.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522056423082493474" />

And finally, the last step in my process for making comics! When I first started making zines back in 2001, I used a standard stapler and just bound the books with slightly crooked staples. I now own a saddle-stitch stapler (see illustration) which makes nicely aligned staples in the binding of my comics. However, I've been compiling a lot of my shorter comics into single issues. And as a result, they have gotten relatively thick. So more and more often, I'm having to ask the copy shop to fold and staple for me. But it's a relatively expensive service (sometimes as expensive as the actual printing), so I do it myself whenever possible. If the comic is long and the print shop is doing the job for me anyway, I'll usually ask them to also trim the edges. If you fold several pages together, you will notice that the inside pages stick out more and more the more pages you add. So at the print shop they will cut all of that excess off, so the pages all line up neatly. Again, for the larger comics, this can make a pretty big difference in their appearance.

So! You now know how I go about making my comics! And you may have thought the drawing was tough! There is so much more to it than that, huh? So I hope you enjoy all the effort that gets put into your comics, whoever you read!Melaina Comicshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16046125590630728846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1205359229287664519.post-24212487010192826102010-09-20T00:05:00.000-07:002010-09-20T08:43:10.285-07:00SPX (Small Press Expo) 2010<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 232px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8EBUPtuK9XJ6xaPI1k9tQ3vtH2CsMSHWlKUIvgkiVtosqUiJFAbR50IBNIkIzZhl0Zz2Iym7fsOHkq_iH-vaKa1zEQAF7oq4uWFu7AHt-eh8roxrW_dqMUU17XNJsH1vLuiGzLBdANSpS/s320/kami+and+me+at+SPX.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519021703666789890" />
For the first time, I crossed the great divide in this country - the Mississippi River - with my comics. Actually, it was the first time I even left the state of California with my comics. And the occasion? Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland. I haven't ever had the extra cash on hand to pay for plane tickets or lodging at comic conventions outside San Francisco (no, my comics don't even remotely cover my expenses). But this convention was 30-minutes from my sister's house. And seeing as I owed a visit to see my newest nephew, Logan (who is now 6-months old), I had a great excuse to make the trip.

This was the first time my family was able to see me in action. Both of my parents, my sister, my nephews Melvin and Logan, my cousins Mary & Tristan - all came out to see me at SPX. I enjoyed watching my early-teen nephew and tween cousin running around looking for buttons. And was highly entertained when I approached the tables of... not one... but TWO... women cartoonists and they immediately told me that they'd met my father (he got to walk around and check things out before I did). Ha! Even 2 years ago, I may have found that terribly embarrassing. But instead, I was totally amused. Another unexpected delight was when Kami, a friend of mine from high school (I went to high school in Maryland) showed up. I hadn't seen her since high school graduation (and no, I will not date myself and post what year that was, but we'll just say it was a loooooong time ago).

But the best part was meeting all of the cartoonists who were there, many of whom I'd never heard of before, as I haven't been involved in the East coast cartoonists scene. There are so many very talented people out there! I was deeply inspired and have been relishing the comics I've brought home with me. Thank you to all of you for making my first out-of-state comics experience so very worthwhile!Melaina Comicshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16046125590630728846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1205359229287664519.post-77765919932649865742010-09-06T23:54:00.000-07:002010-09-20T00:03:24.322-07:00SF ZineFest was 9/4 and 9/5/10!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimjmjMVh1XaboMK2tNqtWJiZSf7G0BQVnWwXC-pOhRkbAPJNbPS1lJxrInYP39zLsIQ1SkZt5_5wqGfiVD6gAu9DCXxu3j1QTb7yDD-C_zj3Vluy90Ja5AFt9TlT3J6NZFrr1hM5V-XhnY/s320/CrashCourseLarge-colored+cover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518886496087634770" />

I was cramming to finish "Crash Course" in time for the San Francisco ZineFest and I actually managed to finish it ahead of schedule. So unusual for me! As is usually the case, I wrote this comic as I was working through my issues in my relationship... not my romantic relationship this time, but my relationship... with other drivers on the road. I don't know if it's irony or if I jinxed myself, but the day after I got the comic back from the printer... I was involved in a road rage incident with another driver. I'm seriously considering working on a Crash Course, volume 2. We'll see if that happens.

But back to ZineFest.... I was sorry that my mentor and dearest friend, MariNaomi was not tabling this year. Almost every year I've managed to have a table next to hers and enjoyed catching up on each others' lives as much as the celebration of comics - mine and others. But this year, I had a new companion with me... my friend Sharon's dog Fozzie. He did his best to fill the gap left by Mari. I think the highlight of the weekend for me was when Mari brought her new dog, Ono, to ZineFest and both dogs got to play. For a brief moment, I wished I were a little dog rolling around and wrestling in the grass. That is... until Fozzie nearly got showered while trying to smell Ono's behind. But all-in-all, a lovely weekend.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM2Q8Q7OHb3D44RohEp2zBj9pl7rdAGxqSnLM6KHtQofr5buLw_hteaDouVAzxs0c2o6Hi1Hhc2Ml_is3Aif2dnNzhOKbvxUxL3CH0nH0Q8L9qWsMKM-fcYPRB5nQEgTA385NNA18T6y69/s320/sfzinefest+2010-with+fozzie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518885837832453410" />Melaina Comicshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16046125590630728846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1205359229287664519.post-9619491068503147272010-04-10T08:10:00.000-07:002010-04-10T08:30:18.761-07:00The "Melaina Comics" iPhone App is Out!
Thanks to the talent of Nicholas Iannone with the coloring and coding, we have released my first iPhone comic application. The app was launched the same day as Apple's new iPad. Although the application was developed with the small interface of the iPhone and iPod Touch in mind, this application can also be viewed using the iPad. Electronic comics have become increasingly popular - from web comics to the launching of applications by well-known comic companies, such as Archie and Dark Horse. And now my indie comics will be joining with the bigger companies, such as Marvel Comics (who also released an application in time for the iPad launch) in making comics available to the electronic audience.

I am a San Francisco-based cartoonist. My comics on the app, like my self-published comics, are autobiographical and cover topics such as dating, relationships with exes, and bisexual themes. Due to my work as a nurse, there is also a little medical education thrown in. Featured in this application are full-color comics made available exclusively for this app.

The gorgeous coloring was done by Nicholas Iannone (who was also the coder / creator for the application and yes, he is also my fiance). Nicholas has colored comics for national syndicates such as King, Creators and United.

To check out the app, go to: http://tinyurl.com/melainacomicsapp

"Melaina is... very hip and smart and funny, and I look forward to reading more of her painfully honest work." -
-Whitney Matheson, Pop Candy, USA TodayMelaina Comicshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16046125590630728846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1205359229287664519.post-88727044638778138612010-03-13T09:13:00.001-08:002010-03-13T09:13:24.468-08:00Friday's watercolor

This is the cover art. I'll probably color it. I'm leaning towards watercolor for this cover, especially as I'm hoping to have Nicholas Iannone (my fiance who colored my comic "Bewildered Bisexual") to work on coloring some other pieces for me.

I'm hoping to get this comic completed in time for Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland, which I plan on attending. This will be my first time exhibiting my comics on the East coast! So for those of you back East, save the dates - September 11 and 12 of 2010! It seems appropriate that my first East Coast exhibit will be in Maryland, as that's my home state.

I'm also working on the Thing-A-Day project, which some of you may have heard about. You're suppose to create something every day in the month of February. I thought it sounded fun and inspiring. I was invited by the folks who put on the Papercuts comic events. What a delightful group to read with - so warm and welcoming.

I got to follow my mentor, Mari Naomi. She is personally responsible for my starting to draw comics. I'd been self-publishing picture books and short-story zines since I was in elementary school. I was also back to painting at the time I met Mari. She asked, "Since you like to write short stories and you like to draw and paint, why don't you try out doing comics and combine your story-telling passion with your visual art passion." And the rest is history. I've been somewhat obsessed with drawing comics ever since.

Every artist at this event was very talented and put on an entertaining performance. I now wish I'd asked my partner to videotape each of the artists so I could enjoy them again.

In any case, for those of you who missed this awesome event, I'm posting the video coverage of my reading. Please keep in mind that this is my first time reading my comics out loud. I wrote my comics as the medium for which they were intended (reading), so the translation may not come across as well.

Check it out.

Melaina Comicshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16046125590630728846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1205359229287664519.post-17040255992155486142009-04-08T19:37:00.000-07:002009-04-25T13:10:33.206-07:00My First Superhero Comic
I'm never sure about drawing comics for friends, as 95% of the time, my friends complain about how I illustrate them. "Is that what I look like?" But my friend Diane suggested that I draw this story for our mutual friend Barb's birthday. It was included in a memory book that Diane put together as a birthday present. She totally remembered the story and told it to the crowd of people celebrating with us, so I guess she wasn't too upset about it. Though maybe I'll hear about it later, when the crowd is gone.
